As part of GCU’s Strategy 2020, GCU London has been focused on the strategic goal of alignment for the Common Good. Taking into account our values of integrity, creativity, responsibility and confidence we began working with UpRising, a UK-wide youth leadership development organisation. UpRising’s mission is to open pathways to power for talented young people.
GCU London sponsors the UpRising Leadership programme, designed for 19 -25yr olds; the programme provides leadership training and so much more. This programme is aimed at people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds, where young people are exposed to the UK’s most senior leaders, across the political, private, public and not for profit sectors.
With a clear focus on social action and community projects the young people are encouraged to rise up, take action to make a positive change and become the best they can be. This is transformational stuff.
As we move forward with UpRising and GCU London continues its sponsorship we have offered mentoring, teaching inputs and space. We continue to build the relationship with UpRising and are now very happy to offer 3 places on the programme for 1 GCU staff member and 2 GCU London students. Participants do not have to pay to take part in the Uprising programmes so this is a fantastic opportunity for our staff and students to really make a difference.
Some GCU London Staff, both from Professional Services and Academic colleagues have taken part in this initiative.
29 Young People graduated from the London programme in July 2016 and they worked on a number of social action projects, which have, and will continue to, benefit their local communities.
The Common Good initiative has brought and continues to bring benefit to local communities. The young UpRisers are provided with Leadership skills and network connections to succeed and GCU London staff and students and should be rightly proud of our association, connection and relationship with this hugely successful programme.
