From the 18 to 29 July, GCU London welcomed two fashion brands on to campus to create exposure and promote their winter pre-collection 2016-2017.
Maggie Smart, leads the Pop-Up Space project and chose GCU London Campus for its excellent fashion location in London. The Pop-Up event concentrates on business to business sales and received a lot of buyers from leading stores such as John Lewis, Selfridges and Fenwicks. They indicated that sales had been successful during the Pop-Up period at GCU London.
The first of the two brands showing was international brand MAIOCCI. Its creator and designer, based in San Fransisco designs in collaboration with a London-based design team that manufacturers in Europe. MAIOCCI only has one point of sale in the UK (House of Fraser) but has established business across mainland Europe.
MAIOCCI products consist of high-quality clothing and colourful jewellery and are priced in the mid-range category.
The second brand was FLEUR B, a new British luxury contemporary brand, with clothes priced between £150 and £500. The entire collection is designed and produced in the UK. Currently they are based in Chelsea (London), but thanks to the Pop-Up Space showroom the company now hopes to sell to department stores such as Selfridges or Liberty.
Maggie, who has her own clothes brand (FOLK) based in London, was able to meet students who visited the showroom during these 2 weeks. She offered the following advice:
“GCU London has a great reputation in the Fashion Industry and excellent industry links, however, it is up to you as students to develop your own relationships and capitalise on all that GCU has to offer you. You have already achieved step one by picking an industry that you are passionate about now I would advise you to work in every job that you can within the industry to create a strong knowledge base and foundation for a long and exciting career – and do not forget that fashion is a team game, not a solo project.”
