On Monday 23 January, GCU London welcomeed Eric Musgrave on to campus. The former CEO of the UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT), founding editor of For Him Magazine (now FHM), and creator of Drapers, EMAP’s massively successful fashion weekly is also one of the best-known commentators on the fashion business. Eric ran an interactive workshop with British School of Fashion students, sharing his insider knowledge about the world of media.
As part of the British School of Fashion Skills Month, which is a series of exciting workshops with industry specialists, Eric covered topics including:
- How to best approach journalists
- What to include in your press release
- What makes a good story
- and The importance of lead times.
He also gave students great advice on who to contact and the type of information that they should expect to provide. Students who attended the workshop, said they left feeling inspired and definitely more informed.
Our current postgraduate student, Ana Cristina Silva, said:
“It’s amazing to hear about Eric’s experience and understand the best way to approach media. Sometimes you think it’s not a difficult task, but a small mistake could effectively result in rejection, and Eric has helped us see how to avoid making those mistakes.”
Erica Charles, Lecturer and Programme Leader on the MSc Fashion Business Creation programme, said:
“It really is a privilege to have someone like Eric who is a hugely experienced and respected professional, come share his insights with our students. Nothing can compare to hearing first-hand from an expert, and Eric delivered it all in an interesting and engaging way. Some of our students will go on to launch their own businesses, or equally work for international fashion brands, so this level and quality of knowledge-information sharing is invaluable.”
