Programme Spotlight: MSc Risk Management

By Dr Madhu Acharyya (MSc Risk Management and MSc International Banking, Finance and Risk Management Programme Leader)

Risk-taking is an integral part of all business functions and decisions – whether strategic or operational.

Traditionally, risk is often thought as a danger; prompting us to avoid it. However, creative organisations consider intelligent risk-taking as an opportunity to create value for both their customers and shareholders in the competitive marketplace. With the increasing complexity of businesses, particularly in the digital era, the demand of risk professionals with a ‘modern thinking’ of risk is sharply increasing.

Our recently refreshed MSc Risk Management programme is designed to help you gain the modern thinking surrounding risk. In particular, the degree provides you with the scope to learn about both the opportunity and dangerous sides of risk, as well as the skill of using the techniques to quantify and manage risk efficiently and effectively.

Studying at Glasgow Caledonian University’s London campus gives you the real opportunity to learn the theoretical perspective of risk. You will be taught by both research-active academics and experienced industry practitioners who will prepare you to become the next generation of risk professionals for a wide range of financial and non-financial companies in both public and private sectors.

We have a wealth of experience in delivering risk education and were one of the first UK Universities to teach Risk Management over 30 years ago. Our alumni are based across the world and several lead risk management teams in a mixture of small and large organisations including TBIAS, UIB, Vaultex UK Ltd, Lockton and Willis TowersWatson.

Besides classroom learning and teaching, our students often get the unique opportunity to attend industry events and conferences on risk-related topics in London. This will give you the networking scope with industry risk professionals which you can capitalise to secure jobs in a wide range of industries both at national and international levels.

If you are already hold a risk-related role (for example, accountant, internal auditor, project manager, operational manager) or want to pursue your career in risk management, GCU London’s MSc Risk Management programme would be the perfect opportunity for you to really enhance your career.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will get an all-rounded understanding of risk from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. This will help you to prepare for a wide number of roles from but not limited to: Risk and Compliance Manager, Risk Analyst, and Risk Officer in both financial and non-financial organisations.

In the final trimester, you will undertake a research project (i.e. dissertation) on your preferred topic(s) under the guidance of experienced supervisors. In the recent past students successfully completed projects on contemporary risk topics. Recent completed titles include ‘Risk transfer efficiency and solvency: the case of catastrophe bonds’, ‘The relationship between financial and ESG performance in non-financial listed companies’ and ‘Impact of cyber data breaches on shareholder value of breached firms their competitors and cybersecurity firms’.

In addition, we encourage and often link the students with London based organisations so that students can experience the industry environment while conducting project research. Many of our students use such links to secure internships and job opportunities after and even before graduation.
