Hand hygiene is everyone’s responsibility – that’s the key message from Glasgow Caledonian University’s Safeguarding Health through Infection Prevention (SHIP) research group on World Hand Hygiene Day (May 5).
This year’s theme for the World Health Organization (WHO) campaign is ‘Unite for safety: clean your hands’ – urging people to lead by example and encourage others to clean their hands.
Professor Lesley Price, SHIP research group co-lead, said: “Hand hygiene is something that benefits everyone and everyone can get on board with.
“It is an effective way for all of us to reduce the spread of infection. I would encourage everyone to support World Hand Hygiene Day 2022 by raising awareness, keeping hands clean and helping others to do the same.”
To promote World Hand Hygiene Day, they put together a short video featuring SHIP teammates and GCU colleagues. The video provides a step-by-step guide to the WHO 6-step technique for hand hygiene using alcohol-based hand rub.

Alicia Ware, PhD student and SHIP team campaign organiser, said: “This year the SHIP team is supporting the WHO World Hand Hygiene Day by highlighting the message that hand hygiene is everyone’s responsibility.
“From healthcare workers and managers to members of the public and other visitors to healthcare facilities, we all have a part to play. Let’s use the WHO 6-step technique for hand hygiene every time we clean our hands and Unite for Safety!”
The SHIP research group is part of the School of Health and Life Sciences’ Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) – Improving Health and Wellbeing for all, which makes a direct and significant contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 3 – good health and wellbeing – issued by United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for peace and prosperity across the planet.
