As part of the ISSJR/GSBS Seminar series and as a guest contributor to the MSc in Citzenship and Human Rights, GCU is delighted to welcome Dr. Lynne Friedli to give a seminar on ‘Psychologising inequality: the case of workfare’.
In this lecture Lynne will look at the rise of psychological explanations and interventions for inequalities, focussing specifically on the role of psychology in the delivery of mandatory unpaid employment programmes. She will also reflect on the importance of the politics of disability and mental health in anti-workfare campaigns of resistance and direct action.
Dr Lynne Friedli is a freelance researcher, with a special interest in the relationship between mental health and the struggle for social justice.She is author of a report for WHO Europe on Mental health, resilience and inequality http://www.euro.who.int/document/e92227.pdf and has contributed to the forthcoming WHO Europe Strategy on Mental Health.
Lynne is interested in current debates about the politics of ‘assets based approaches’ and the psychologising of public health, and is currently researching the use of psychological approaches in workfare and other employment programmes.
