As an overseas student, GCU has provided a memorable experience and offered opportunities to learn more about the event industry in Scotland.

2020 MSc International Tourism and Event Management graduate Ka Pui Ao shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.

I chose to study at GCU because…

I chose to study at GCU for two main reasons. The study program match and link to my bachelor’s degree and the program content attracts me and the location of the campus is very convenient for everything.

The most important aspect of my university experience has been…

The most important experience is during the university course, we are able to visit different kinds of conferences and events which provided me a memorable experience in Scotland as an overseas student it offered opportunities to learn more about the event industry in Scotland.

My biggest lesson learned so far is…

I was always quite a shy person and during my time in University, as my group mates were all Scottish, I was quite hard to understand but they were so kind and encouraged me to explain my thoughts slowly and they didn’t mind repeating themselves hence after a year I was brave enough to share my opinions actively.

I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…

During the time in university, we were required to have some extra experience that related to our course. I volunteered for two activities through Glasgow life and gained experience on helping others with different ages and languages.

I get my inspiration from…

I get my inspiration from the lecturers at English centre. As an oversea student, my writing style is different from the British style and my English level is not good enough. Hence, I was always seeking help from English centre and the lecturers really helped me and showed their professionalism, I really appreciate that!

My next steps look like…

After I graduated from University, I joined a mentor program by GCU. There is one manager from the hotel industry that got in touch with me and discussed what my career plan will be. I’m glad that I joined this program as I’m able to learn about the recent issues and predictions for the industry. I would like to build my own business in the future.

You are most likely to bump into me…

I really enjoyed the canteen and the library on campus. I spent almost 2 hours every day in the library after class and the environment was so good and very clean which made me feel better when studying. Also, I had lunch and coffee with my classmates at the canteen, I am missing the old times!
