“GCU has a modern, state of the art campus. It’s library in particular is a great resource.”

2022 BSc (Hons) Pharmacology graduate Heather Jenkinson shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.

I chose to study at GCU because…

GCU is in an excellent location, central to Glasgow City. Outside academics, there are plenty of ways to be sociable. Additionally, GCU has a modern, state of the art campus. It’s library in particular is a great resource. My course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology among other organisations therefore a degree in Pharmacology from GCU definitely prepares you for industry.

The most important aspect of my university experience has been…

My fellow classmates and I have had a rather unique experience in University, given that the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal on campus learning. We had to quickly adapt our approach to the course, and the staff at the University were very supportive and attentive throughout.

My biggest lesson learned so far is…

Throughout school, my science classes were comprised of predominantly boys. While I’ve always felt STEM is for everyone, it is still largely a male dominated area. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to believe in your own capabilities. It doesn’t matter what your gender, race or religion is; you are capable of whatever you want to achieve, and GCU welcomes diversity.

I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…

I am proud to be part of a University which takes Climate Change seriously, and strives to make change.

I get my inspiration from…

I am excited about the unlimited potential of pharmacology, and am interested in neuroscience and neuro pharmaceuticals in particular. I find my inspiration from the amazing work of current scientific researchers as well as all the doctors and nurses of our NHS. I’ve also grown up around family and friends with neurological conditions, so my determination to add my own research to the field feels both personal and vocational.

My next steps look like…

I will be completing my Masters degree in Neuroscience and Mental Health come September 2022.

You are most likely to bump into me…

Following University my aim is to pursue a research-led career in the pharmaceutical industry. I love laboratory work and hope to be spending a lot of time in the lab in my career.
