“The opportunities and support given to students who have faced barriers to learning is amazing.”

2024 Environmental Civil Engineering graduate Erin Colyer shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.

I chose to study at GCU because…

I loved the atmosphere during the open day, the many modern study spaces are mentally stimulating and make it easy to focus, and the support given by lecturers seems much higher than other universities.

The most important aspect of my university experience has been…

Learning to adapt to situations, beginning university during the Covid pandemic was certainly a challenge, but learning to overcome and work through that, whilst adapting to online learning then back to in-person lectures, I feel has taught me a lot of valuable skills around adaptability, communication and teamwork which I will take with me into my professional career.

My biggest lesson learned so far is…

The importance of time management, when you get to the stage where you have multiple pieces of coursework due, and exams to study for all at the one time it’s so important to prioritise, plan and focus to manage your time suitably.

I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…

The opportunities and support given to students who have faced barriers to learning is amazing and something you don’t see at many universities. I think giving equal opportunity to access further education is extremely important, as your past/present experiences never define your future, and GCU allows you to explore and maximise your potential.

I get my inspiration from…

All of the amazing woman in STEM making a difference in the industry.

My next steps look like…

Starting my Graduate Job as a Site Engineer with Balfour Beatty!

You are most likely to bump into me…

Working away in the computer lab.
