The lecturer this year will be Pauline Graham from Social Firms Scotland.  The lecture will consider perspectives on the Social Enterprise Community in Scotland which has been built on the roots of community action and an inherent enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. It will also reflect on the development of social enterprise in Europe and how the ‘Scottish Model’ fits into the more international aspects of social enterprise. The lecture will also speculate on key challenges for social enterprise in Scotland and the need to frame the forthcoming 10 year social enterprise strategy within a wider policy context.

John Pearce (1942 – 2011)
John Pearce, who died from cancer aged just 69, was a major and influential force in community development and in particular was a pioneer in community enterprise – the precursor to social enterprise. For nearly fifty years, John‘s ideas, inspiration and talent for clear thinking were a driving force behind people-centred development and especially around the principles and practice of collective and community enterprise. He wrote extensively throughout his working life with an insight well-illustrated in his seminal work: Social Enterprise in Anytown (2003). He was a thinker who managed to turn theories into practice and directly helped the development of communities in Scotland, the UK and wider afield.

Pauline Graham, CEO, Social Firms Scotland (SFS)
Before joining SFS in 2008, Pauline worked at SCVO and managed the Social Economy Scotland Partnership that attracted over £5m in EU funding to support social economy developments in Scotland. Pauline has represented Scotland at European Commission level and has continued to participate in EU Social Entrepreneurship Networks. As well as being a founding director of Ready for Business Procurement LLP, Pauline represents social enterprise on a range of government and Third Sector fora. She has co-authored several publications and is a graduate from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BA (Hons) in Communications. Pauline is aware of the work of John Pearce and met him on numerous occasions.
