International Women’s Day event reflects on the influence of Professor Ailsa McKay
Morag Gillespie, Senior Research Fellow in Women in Scotland’s Economy (WiSE) Research Centre, led a discussion at the International Women’s Day celebration in the Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, Dumfries.
The discussion followed a viewing of the documentary Who’s Counting: On Sex, lies and global economics, in which feminist economist and GCU honorary doctorate Professor Marilyn Waring demystifies the language of economics and exposes how unpaid work and care, done mainly by women, is missing from economic accounts.
The event also included a new short film to celebrate the work of Scotland’s foremost feminist economist, the late Professor Ailsa McKay, who died last year. The film ‘For Ailsa’ includes a moving tribute to her by former First Minister Alex Salmond MSP. Dr Ima Jackson, in the School of Health and Life Sciences, produced the film which was created with contemporary artists Rachel Lowther and Anne-Marie Copestake.
