ResearchGate is the world’s largest professional network for scientists and researchers with more than 1.3million members. With access to over 45million abstracts (not full text!), Researchers can search through 7 of the largest databases and millions of smaller ones simultaneously, including PubMED, Cornwell University & CiteSeer; by using the
literature search at http://www.researchgate.net/literature

They also have the largest science and research specific job board in the world at http://www.researchgate.net/jobs/research/?nav=jobs

As well as the largest Science and Research Conference Board at http://www.researchgate.net/conferences/related/?nav=conferences

They also featured in the New York Times on Tuesday; the article is really good for explaining what ResearchGate is all about! http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html

Eduroam now available

Glasgow Caledonian University is an Eduroam site.  Our classification is as a “Home and Visited” site. This means that visitors to GCU can authenticate their laptops through their own institution, as long as it is an Eduroam site. This will give the visitor Internet access. Conversely, any GCU staff member who visits another institution will be able to authenticate their laptop back to GCU from the ‘visited’ institution. Having trouble linking in to the full text of journal articles and eBooks?

People have been having trouble linking in to the full text of journal articles and eBooks. The quick and easy solution to this problem is to close explorer, and use firefox browser instead. Don’t use the desktop icon to start Firefox, use the start menu. 

  • Move your cursor to the start icon at the bottom left of your screen (in the labs this is a round icon).
  • Click the icon and the start menu will appear.
  • On some computers, firefox will be on the list of programs, double click on it to start.
  • In some labs, you need to start firefox by typing firefox in the run box on the start menu at the foot of the screen. The icon will then appear above the box, double click it to run the program.

University statement on exams and bad weather

Important Message Concerning Scheduled Examinations
The University is currently open and today’s scheduled examinations are proceeding as timetabled. The morning examinations proceeded with a normal attendance of students and staff. For this afternoon’s assessments many students are already on campus and more are arriving at the University. The decision has therefore been taken to proceed with the assessments as scheduled. Depending on the impact of the weather on attendance at this afternoon’s examinations, options will be considered with a view to ensuring that no student is disadvantaged. Students please check e-mails for further information.”

In response to student feedback Level 4 of the Library has been transformed into a haven of quiet study and is now a silent study zone. There are individual study desks lining the wall or for those who prefer to spread out a large boardroom style table. The existing PCs have been moved to other floors so no study space is lost. We are always interested in student feedback – please use the Your Views service or ask for a form at The Base on Level 0, Saltire Centre.

Using the internet when on placement

If GCU students turn up at a GG&C library with their matric cards, whilst they are on placement (they must be on NHS GG&C placement and be able to prove it if challenged eg give ward details), read the terms and conditions and sign in, they will be logged onto a computer by a member of library staff. They won’t be able to print or downlaod (even onto a USB stick) but they can access email and email stuff to themselves and access any Blackboard. When they’ve finished they will have to tell a member of staff who will note the time, so that staff can monitor access. You still won’t be able to borrow books and this is a temporary measure, but the idea is eventually that all students on NHS placements will be issued with temporary logins by IT.
